Ever heard of a “roguelike” RPG?
I hadn’t, until now! Dinofarm Games is working hard on a roguelike RPG, which is essentially a dungeon crawler type game with randomly generated maps for infinite replay.
While most roguelikes are very dry, usually with no art or animation and clumsy interfaces, ours is exactly the opposite. We have turn based gameplay, randomly generated maps, permadeath, and online leaderboards, but we also have full 2D animation, and I dare say a lot of personality.
They have posted a video of very early (pre-beta) gameplay on their facebook page, so be sure to check it out!

Wow, you must be new to gaming then, as “roguelikes” have been around for decades. Just sayin’. ^_^

Could be interesting. Will keep an eye on this one as it has potential.

yes, because not knowing a terribly lame name for a sub-genre of a genre of game i don’t ever play must mean i’m new to gaming.
seriously… “roguelike”? wtf.

Wikipedia is your friend, my friend.

I didn’t start playing them until a few years ago, and even I had heard of them beforehand. Just saying. ^_~

Been playin em forever but just within the last year or so heard someone use the term roguelike. I don’t think everyone uses it.

Yeah… it’s kind of scary how little game critics seem to know about games these days, but it does explain a lot about how games like oblivion get nothing but 9s and 10s

So according to Davis, game critics must have advanced knowledge of sub-genres for every type of game out there. Unfortunately, unless I was hardcore into the Tabletop RPG genre (which I never have been) I don’t see how I could possibly know what a roguelike RPG is, as there don’t tend to be video games made off the genre.
Wikipedia is linked in the article, btw, Brian, as that’s how I learned what it meant.

I like how the reviewer STILL doesn’t know what a roguelike is! “Tabletop RPG genre”?!

I like the idea of this game a lot. I’m not totally sold on the characters but I hope it turns out well.

Davis does actually have a point. Rogue was the first graphical RPG as the dungeon crawling era of video games began. Since its creation in the early 80’s many RPGs were designed with its structure and have been called roguelikes and have led to the RPGs we have today. Also, so you can see how far we’ve come in the last 25 years, here’s a link to the game that has been ported to the ipod for nastalgic purposes.

At least Matt was being honest about not having heard of rogue rpg’s. Give the guy a break; maybe he’s got a life, you know? Lol, jk. But a lot of reviewers, I suspect, would look it up on wiki and then play like they knew it all along. So cheers Matt.
