Here at iPGN we got the opportunity to take Toki Tori out for a test drive. We’ve kicked the tires, revved it up and spent a few hours joy riding. After a few hours of play we can safely say that Toki Tori is going to be one of the app store stand-outs.

Toki Tori is a platform puzzler, similar to Archibald’s Adventures. You can play it now on your Wii until it comes out for iPhone. In Toki Tori your goal is to collect all the eggs in each level. You play a fat yellow bird with limited mobility, and a batman-style utility belt. To get through levels you get items on your belt to teleport, build briges, breath under water, img_0003and more. To move around just touch where you want your guy to go. If you can’t go there you will see a ring of x’s, if you can Toki Tori will start moving there at a quick pace. Tap him while moving to stop. To use one of your items just tap on it’s icon at the top of the screen. The game s very well suited for the iPhone. Unlike Archibald’s Adventures, you don’t have to rely on reflexes to complete parts of the puzzle, so the frustration with the controls I felt with Archibald’s doesn’t apply to Toki Tori.

One of the things that jumped out at me first when playing Toki Tori is it’s high level of polish. It’s been brough over from a full console game, and you can feel it. The graphics stand out among many in the app store and add a high-level of polish to the game. The feel of the graphics and fludity of movement reminds me a lot of Donkey Kong Country. It has similar animated movements, and lush detailed environments.

The levels in Toki Tori are a lot of fun, and there are a lot of them. It’s a delight to see your little birdie guy waddle through the levels and solve all the puzzles. Toki Tori definitely has a lot of charm.

After playing this early build, I am very excited to see the full version come out for the iPhone. It’s one of those rare titles that merges the graphics and story well into a tight puzzle platforming package.  The game is as fun as it is cute, and I know this is one of those titles that can easily become a favorite.
